A huge announcement and amazing breakthrough in the Latin and the international music industry! The Latin Grammy nominations have finally come out, with its leaders being the familiar and popular Reggaeton stars J Balvin, Bad Bunny, and Ozuna. However, some new and iconic faces will be making an appearance this year, on November 19th. One of those that stands out in particular is Nicki Minaj. Most of the people representing the top of the Latin music industry are Reggaeton or Latin pop singers, not so many rappers, and most of them are men. Nicki Minaj is the first American rapper to get this honorable nomination.
Nicki Minaj got two nominations for Latin Grammys this year, one for Record of the Year and one for Song of the Year supporting her new hit “Tusa” with Karol G. Her recognition is special because she is American, a rapper, and a woman. It is important to see the Latin music industry not only increasingly collaborate internationally and with American artists, but also the other way around, inviting American artists into their music scene and culture as they give American artists the same recognition when they deserve it. This adds to Nicki Minaj’s impressive record with Grammy award nominations, with her having 10 past nominations since 2011. She might not be the only woman receiving a nomination, as she is joined by Spanish speaking stars of her caliber such as Rosalia, but she is the only female rapper this year and the Latin music scene is predominantly male. We love to see this improved, multifaceted, and well deserved representation! We are looking forward to the event, and hopefully Nicki Minaj will win her first Grammy Award soon!
