First appearing on the silver screen in the 1988 film Child’s Play, Chucky has become a staple of popular culture in the past few decades. The murderous children’s toy has been wreaking havoc in Hollywood for over three decades now, appearing in eight films over the course of the Child’s Play franchise. Most recently in 2019 when Lars Klevberg directed a remake of the 1988 original, though the project was met with lukewarm reviews. This didn’t spell the end for Chucky however, who will be making the leap to television in the near future. The new television series Chucky is set to debut on SYFY later this year, and we now have an official teaser trailer for the promising project.
Chucky is infamous for being humorously evil, and the, albeit brief, teaser illuminates that fully. Punctuated with Chucky’s menacing laugh as he swings a butcher’s knife through the air, it is clear that the evil doll is back to his old antics. This was to be expected slightly though as franchise architect Don Mancini, the original screenwriter of the first seven Child’s Play films, is back to work on Chucky and revive the magic that made the franchise so unique in the first place. Per Mancini however, this was all part of the plan: “I deliberately ended Cult of Chucky on a series of cliffhangers, major cliffhangers, because I knew a TV series would be the ideal place to accommodate delving into the ramifications.” It looks like fans are in for a big treat.
Few horror franchises in history have been as successful as the Child’s Play franchise. A few probably come to mind immediately, though they don’t match the energy that Chucky has brought to Hollywood since the 80’s. It will be interesting to see his return, though expectations are high already as Mancini is a master of his craft. Fans can eagerly anticipate the debut of Chucky on SYFY this upcoming fall.
