When it comes to outlandish films, few names if any are as critically acclaimed as that of Tim Burton’s. Responsible for films such as 1988’s Beetlejuice and 1996’s Mars Attacks!, the esteemed director has made quite a name for himself by taking the most abnormal of storylines and bringing them to life in the most imaginative of ways. He has been an active member of the Hollywood film circuit since the beginning of the 1970’s and continues to remain active, most recently directing the 2019 Disney film Dumbo based upon the classic children’s story about an elephant who uses his ears to fly. Burton’s latest project may be among the most tame of them all however, based upon the classic Addams Family character Wednesday Addams in Wednesday, and he has just enlisted the help of an old friend to score the upcoming project: the extremely talented Danny Elfman.
The duet of Burton and Elfman is nothing new, with Elfman also writing the original score for the 1993 film The Nightmare Before Christmas which Burton also served as a producer on. Eflman’s talents are equally as lauded as Burton’s as well, with the revered producer working on music for a myriad of other projects ranging from The Simpsons to Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and enjoying a successful career to say the least. Like Burton however, he remains as active as ever, and now the two are ready to unite forces once again for the upcoming Netflix series Wednesday. With the titular character set to be played by Jenna Ortega, Wednesday follows the story of iconic fictional character Wednesday Addams as she enters a new school and attempts to learn to harness her psychic abilities and utilize them for good all while dealing with the unpleasantries that going to a new school has to offer. Wednesday has been ordered for eight episodes and is expected to debut on Netflix sometime next year.
The Addams Family is one of those niche franchises that has managed to permeate pop culture for decades beyond its inception, and Wednesday is proof of that. While the iconic franchise was originally rebooted in 2019 in animated form, this new series will likely be something entirely different and a refreshing twist for fans of the iconic family. Adding Elfman to the series’ team should certainly help, and eager fans can remain on the lookout for further updates about Wednesday in the coming months.
