Wicked musical enthusiasts can expect the movie adaption to arrive earlier than it was supposed to release. According to Variety, the first installment will premiere on November 27, 2024, instead of its original date, December 25, 2024. The representatives for Wicked thought that it’d be “better positioned” around Thanksgiving instead of the initial Christmas release.
The movie is based on the Broadway musical Gregory Maguire‘s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, L. Frank Baum‘s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.
Wicked is about two childhood friends named Elphaba and Glinda, who begin to drift away from each other yet still try to keep the friendship alive. The story is said to be a follow-up to The Wizard of Oz because it also continues from Dorothy’s arrival in Oz.
The film will be produced by Marc Platt and delivered through his company Marc Platt Productions. Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz are currently working together on the screenplay adaptation.
