Music and film have come to go hand in hand, both serving to explore a range of topics that you may not experience in your everyday conversations. They have both come to play an integral role in shaping one another as well with film’s exploring some of the most prolific points in the history of music and music that virtually shapes a film as the backdrop to some of Hollywood’s most iconic scenes. Both are integral pieces of popular culture that only seem to grow in importance as they explore increasingly sensitive yet important topics. A new project currently in the works is set to do just that with Colson Baker, better known by his stage name Machine Gun Kelly, set to star in the project Good News as a young and troubled musician dealing with the throes of fames, drawing direct influence from a few artists who have tragically lost their lives in recent years.
More specifically, Good News is going to follow MGK’s character in the final days of his life. Though not directly telling any of their stories, the film is said to draw inspiration from the lives of young rappers who have lost their lives in the past few years such as Mac Miller, Lil Peep, Juice Wrld and Pop Smoke, most of whom passed after suffering a drug overdose. While it is unclear which elements of each of their stories will be interpolated into Good News, there are certainly high hopes for the screenplay penned by Tim Sutton fresh off the success of his 2020 film Funny Face. President of Rivulet Media’s film division, the company producing the project, Rob Paris had this to add: “Colson Baker is that rare talent who is ascending at an incredible pace both in film and music. He is exactly the kind of artist that Rivulet Media is looking to partner with and we couldn’t be more excited to support him on both fronts, especially with Tim Sutton’s powerful screenplay and vision, which are custom tailored to Colson’s formidable skills.”
MGK has been in a transitional phase in his career over the past few years. His most recent album Tickets to My Downfall saw him experiment with the pop-punk genre, and he recently starred as Tommy Lee in the 2019 Mötley Crüe documentary The Dirt. Though this role will not be as biographical as that one his experience should come in handy here as he attempts to embody the spirit of some incredibly talented and esteemed individuals. This should certainly be an interesting endeavor for fans of MGK or any of the previously named artists who helped inspire the film, and those fans can remain on the lookout for further updates about Good News as production begins next month.
