The Gyllenhaals are no strangers to Hollywood. Maggie and her brother, Jake, first popped up in Hollywood in the 1990’s and go on to appear alongside eachother in the 2001 cult classic film Donnie Darko. Since then, they have both led incredibly successful careers and are still active members of the entertainment industry. Now, Maggie will be making her directorial debut almost exactly three decades since she first appeared in Hollywood in 1992 with the upcoming Netflix film The Lost Daughter.
Set to star The Crown’s Olivia Colman, The Lost Daughter tells the story who becomes affixed with a mother-daughter relationship she observes while on vacation. The affixation stems from a negative place however, haunting her with memories from her young motherhood and poor choices she had made. In The Lost Daughter, she is forced to confront these memories and decisions and their consequences head-on, leading her on a whirlwind of an experience. Netflix acquired the film just two weeks ago, prior to its premiere at the Venice Film Festival this September and before other interested parties could outbid them. Now they will be the ones distributing the project, with The Lost Daughter set to release in theaters first on December 17th before hitting the streaming platform on December 31st.
Netflix proves they are alive and well, still kicking out original content one project at a time. Not all of their projects see theatrical releases however, making The Lost Daughter stand out among the rest. The names attached to it certainly help as well, and the story sounds intriguing on the surface. We will just have to wait and see when The Lost Daughter hits theaters and Netflix this December.
