Whether you’re a fan of them or not, superhero movies have come to dominate the film industry as we know it. Bolstered by the success of Marvel over the past decade, production studios have been going all in rebooting a myriad of classic Hollywood franchises that have been integral in defining the ethos surrounding superheroes and the allure that comes with them. From classics like Batman and Iron Man to more obscure titles such as Doctor Strange, the genre has experienced something akin to a modern day renaissance that has catapulted it to even greater heights and expanded its audience tremendously. As a result, the scope of superhero projects has also changed dramatically during this time and that is made abundantly apparent by one franchise in particular: Ryan Reynolds introduced fans to an incredibly unique superhero when he undertook the titular role in the new Deadpool franchise, and this week he seemingly gave fans an update on the franchise’s highly anticipated third installment.
Originally debuting in 2016, Deadpool stars Reynolds as a former special forces soldier who begins work as a mercenary before falling ill with cancer. Though he believes his days are numbered initially, this changes when a stranger offers him a new experimental treatment that will combat his cancer better than any other treatment that is readily available. Though it helps in that regard, the treatment leaves him disfigured and covered in burn scars and ultimately forces him to adopt the masked persona that is the film’s titular star in Deadpool. This inventive superhero was immediately unique in that his slick-talking, no-nonsense attitude was refreshingly hilarious for fans in a way that superhero films typically aren’t, and for that reason Deadpool has become a fan favorite. The franchise’s second installment released back in 2018 and fans have been eagerly anticipating the third since then, and now it looks like it may be even closer than anybody thought. In an interview with Reynolds and franchise director Shawn Levy this week promoting their latest film The Adam Project, the talented duo briefly touched upon the potential of Deadpool 3 with the esteemed actor adding that “I’ll be able to get into… Deadpool a little bit more clearly and definitively down the road.” More details will likely become clear as we venture down that road, but until then eager fans can catch The Adam Project on Netflix when it premieres on March 11th.
Reynolds is arguably one of the most popular actors on the planet, and having a name like his at the helm of a franchise like Deadpool is huge.
