Basketball had to lay its roots before it would be able to capture the attention of audiences around the world and become arguably the most popular sport on Earth, and it would do so in a variety of cities across the planet. Now Showtime is set to take a look at one of the cities which basketball burrowed its way into and the culture that has evolved as a result in the upcoming documentary NYC Point Gods.
It’s impossible to deny the fact that New York City has quite possibly the most unique culture on the planet, whether it’s basketball related or not. Basketball has subsequently thrived in NYC as a result, with many remembering the innumerable timeless games played at parks across the city such as the iconic Rucker Park. Now Showtime wants to shine a spotlight on what many consider to be the hotbed of all things pop culture, and the project already has some pretty impressive names attached. NYC Point Gods is set to be produced alongside Kevin Durant and Rich Kleinman’s Boardroom and will explore the careers of a variety of remarkable names that includes Kenny Anderson, Mark Jackson, Stephon Marbury and the infamous God Shammgod. Eager fans won’t have to wait much longer either, with NYC Point Gods set to premiere on Friday July 29th at 9 PM on Showtime.
If there is any city in the world that deserves to have its basketball culture examined, it’s definitely New York City. The Big Apple is home to countless NBA superstars and is the Mecca of entertainment, making it the perfect stomping ground for Showtime to investigate basketball culture at its core. It should be interesting to see how they capture the city in all of its glory when NYC Point Gods premieres this summer.
