On Aug. 29, multi-platinum, Grammy-winning singer Brandy will officially receive the BMI President’s Award at the 2019 R&B/Hip-Hop Awards. “As a singer/songwriter, actress and humanitarian, Brandy is a triple threat in every sense of the word,” said BMI VP Catherine Brewton, who will host the event alongside BMI president/CEO Mike O’Neill.
“Her timeless hits about love and heartbreak were anthems to many coming of age during the ’90s and secured her place in R&B history. We are so excited to honor Brandy with the BMI President’s Award and look forward to celebrating a night of great music ”
Ever since her debut in 1994 with her hit single “I Wanna Be Down”, from the self-titled album Brandy, Brandy has made six studio albums, worked alongside icons such as Diana Ross and Whitney Houston, and is most known for her star roles in TV shows such as “Moesha,” “The Game” and, Lee Daniels’ “Star”. Later this year, Brandy is also planning to release her first studio LP since “Two Eleven” in 2012.
As reported by prnewswire, “the BMI President’s Award is presented to an individual songwriter, composer or producer who has made exemplary contributions to the art of music and songwriting and profoundly influenced the entertainment industry.” As the 2019 recipient, Brandy will join fellow R&B songstress Toni Braxton, rapper Ludacris, “Superfly” singer Curtis Mayfield and former Black Eyed Peas member Will.i.am.
