It’s no surprise that Aquaman 2 director James Wan will incorporate some horror aspects into the upcoming sequel. Wan has a diverse background in the horror genre, as he directed films such as The Conjuring, Insidious, and Insidious: Chapter 2. He was also a co-writer of The Nun. However, his popularity originated from his position as a co-creator of the Saw franchise and has worked on all of those films since.
In an excerpt from DC FanDome’s Q&A session with Wan, in regard to horror being incorporated in the film, Wan stated:
I think it’s something that’s a big part of who I am, and it just naturally comes out in these kinds of films. And especially a movie like Aquaman, you know where the story takes place in these underwater worlds that can be very scary. So naturally, my love for the horror genre just means that I latch myself to these scenes and try to give them a little bit more of my scary sauce.
Aquaman grossed over $1 billion worldwide so it wasn’t a surprise when Warner Bros. announced a sequel was in development in early 2019. This isn’t James Wan’s first rodeo in terms of working with big budget action films, as Wan also directed Furious 7. The official release date for Aquaman 2 is December 16, 2022. On top of Wan returning to direct the film, a majority of the original cast will return to play their roles and Aquaman co-writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick will return to write the script for the blockbuster sequel.
