Last week the Bronx rapper announced that she had a big announcement for us all, and my oh my was she right! The announcement arrived in the form of an exhilarating visual and a contagious tune titled “Up.”
While I would typically advocate for safety, I cannot do so in this case. Run, don’t walk to YouTube, and stream Cardi B’s music video for her new single! The “Up” visual is an adventure for the senses, filled with colors and fashion, and a catchy hook that will welcome itself into your memory. The short video manages to fit several spectacular looks in a mélange of retro vignettes that pay homage to hip-hop aesthetics of the past. There are references to In Living Color’s Fly Girls, TLC and fish-eye lenses from the late 90s, all scored to throwback 808 beats.
But wait, theres more. The visual also captures Cardi as she lays 2020 to rest atop a sarcophagus in a cemetery in a sexy black outfit, and later wearing a wig filled with Barbie doll heads that sing. Yes, this video has it all!
I simply cannot imagine music videos being the same after this. The “Up,” visual is truly a game changer, one that cannot be captured in words. “Up” along with “WAP” are expected to appear on Cardi’s highly-anticipated sophomore album due sometime this year. It will be the follow-up to her 2018 debut, Invasion of Privacy. In 2020, she also teamed up with Blackpink for their song “Bet You Wanna” and appeared on Anitta’s “Me Gusta.”
