Doechii is on an impressive upward trajectory, currently basking in the glow of Grammy nominations, a celebrated television performance, and her recent Tiny Desk Concert. She has ambitious plans to maintain this momentum into 2025.
In the coming year, the “Denial Is a River” artist is set to release her debut album, a project she is incredibly excited about.
The artist, signed to Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), has emphasized that her breakout project, Alligator Bites Never Heal, is a mixtape rather than a traditional album. In an interview with Variety published on December 6, Doechii revealed her intention to release a formal debut LP in 2025, promising fans a rich sound characterized by abundant live instrumentation.
“All I can focus on right now is this album,” she shared, expressing her excitement for the journey ahead. “I’m eager to create more hits, produce more music, and reach new milestones in my career—that’s my sole focus.”
Just days prior to this interview, she captivated her audience with a mesmerizing performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, offering fans a glimpse into what she describes as “the future of hip-hop.”
The performance included a heartfelt tribute to MF DOOM, as Doechii began and ended the showcase with poignant quotes from the late rap icon’s 2011 Red Bull Music Academy lecture. Embracing her identity as the self-proclaimed Swamp Princess, she took to social media to share that she choreographed the entire performance herself, describing it as a homage to both hip-hop and the strength of Black women.
“This one is for hip-hop,” she expressed on X, conveying her deep inspiration drawn from the rich history of hip-hop and its significant influence on her identity today.
“This marks my first performance that I’ve choreographed myself, and a key aspect I wanted to emphasize is my bond with Black women through the lens of hip-hop,” she explained.
She went on to say, “With the incredible support of hair artist Malcom Marquez, we managed to bring this symbolic art performance to life in just a week’s time.”
Additionally, she took a moment to acknowledge and express gratitude to everyone on her team for their invaluable contributions in making this vision a reality.
