Jake Schreier, best known for directing Marvel’s Thunderbolts, is reportedly in early negotiations to take the helm of Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated X-Men reboot. Following the box office and critical success of Thunderbolts, Marvel seems eager to keep Schreier in the fold.
While the X-Men film hasn’t been officially announced yet, it’s currently in active development. Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Assassin’s Creed) is on board to write the script, with Marvel boss Kevin Feige producing.
The MCU has been gradually paving the way for mutants, with subtle hints in shows like Ms. Marvel and multiverse cameos like Patrick Stewart’s Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Marvel is said to be aiming for a fresh, younger lineup of mutants. Casting rumors suggest Sadie Sink may play Jean Grey, Harris Dickinson is being eyed for Cyclops, and Julia Butters could portray Kitty Pryde. Javier Bardem is also reportedly in talks to play the film’s villain, Mr. Sinister.
Production is expected to start in 2026, with a potential release in 2027, possibly after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, setting the stage for the mutants’ official entry into the MCU.
