Missy Elliott has joined the cast of Pharrell and Michel Gondry‘s untitled movie musical. The hip-hop innovator and legend will work alongside Halle Bailey, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Brian Tyree Henry, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Variety revealed that the “The Rain” hitmaker hasn’t been in the film scene since voice-acting Missy in 2004’s Shark Tale. Additionally, Missy Elliott made a surprise cameo in the 2003 dance flick Honey. The multi-talented MC has played roles in two episodes of Fox’s musical series Star in 2017 as well. The play, set in Pharrell’s hometown, Virginia Beach, takes admiration from the Atlantis Apartments in his neighborhood growing up. The script will be written by Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson.
Missy Elliott confirmed her role in the producer’s new musical film on X, formerly known as Twitter, after responding to the news through a tweet.
“Ayyyyyye,” the rapper wrote alongside emojis that mirrored her excitement.
This summer, Missy Elliott is set to embark on her first headlining tour: Out of This World — The Missy Elliott Experience. The tour promises to be a star-studded affair, with performances from Ciara, Busta Rhymes, and Timbaland. The tour will span 24 cities, kicking off on July 4 in Vancouver at Rogers Arena and concluding on August 22 in Rosemont, Ill.
