According to Variety, Moana 2 has achieved a remarkable milestone, grossing an impressive $882.5 million globally at the box office. Not only has it surpassed the $850 million mark—a feat accomplished by only 92 films in cinematic history—but it is also projected to cross the $1 billion threshold by early 2025. If it reaches this milestone, Moana 2 will become the fourth film from Walt Disney Animation Studios to achieve such a staggering financial success, following in the footsteps of Zootopia ($1.02 billion), Frozen ($1.29 billion), and Frozen II ($1.45 billion).
Even if it falls short of the $1 billion mark, the latest Disney film has firmly established itself as a genuine blockbuster. With a reported budget of $150 million, Moana 2 likely needed to earn approximately $375 million to break even—a figure it has already exceeded by a significant margin. Should it achieve the anticipated $1 billion milestone, it will ascend to an even more exclusive echelon of success.
With its diverse array of brands, including 20th Century Studios, Marvel Studios, and Pixar, Disney has built an impressive portfolio of films that have grossed over a billion dollars. This includes notable releases like the 2016 Pixar sequel Finding Dory, which earned $1.025 billion, and the 2024 sensation Inside Out 2, which raked in $1.698 billion.

Disney remarkable debut
Additionally, Disney boasts several films that have achieved the remarkable $2 billion milestone, such as Lucasfilm’s Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which brought in $2.056 billion, alongside Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbusters Avengers: Infinity War ($2.048 billion) and Avengers: Endgame, which reached a staggering $2.748 billion. Despite this impressive track record, Moana 2 would still only represent Disney’s 28th film to cross the billion-dollar threshold overall.
It’s remarkable to note that Moana 2 has the potential to gross $1 billion, especially given that it was initially planned as a Disney+ series. The studio’s choice to transform it into a theatrical release has undoubtedly yielded significant financial rewards. This success may signal a pivotal change in Disney’s strategy for developing its exclusive streaming content, particularly when it involves key intellectual properties from Walt Disney Animation Studios.
