Jesy Nelson has officially dropped her first-ever solo single, “Boyz.” The singer was once a member of the R&B group Little Mix but decided to step down for her mental health. Getting into further detail about her decision, she told Cosmopolitan
“I immediately became a different person. I had anxiety. Whenever we had a music video, I put an enormous amount of pressure on myself to try and lose weight.”
“Boyz” is particularly special because Nicki Minaj is featured. Minaj has previously collaborated with the singer and her former group members on “Women Like Me.” (2018).
“Boyz” serves as a tribute toward a bad boy for life. Nelson ultimately details the kind of man who catches her eye. For instance, she sings pre-chorus
“Ooh, I like them tattoos and them gold teeth/Type to make me feel like I’m a baddie/I like the fire you’re bringin’ out of me/Baby, somethin’ ’bout him got me weak in the knees.”
Minaj, the queen of hip-hop, undoubtedly glides on the beat. Aside from paying tribute to members of Bad Boy Records, she drops confident bars about her beauty and leaves warning bars for the envious females out there.
“Word to Biggie, Diddy, and Mase (Woo)/Woah, like Rob, won’t find a prettier face (Let’s go),” she raps. Elsewhere Nicki spits “My body smokin’, come get a pole/Lucky charms on my anklets, no, not cereal/Jesy, we got all jelly bitches actin’ real messy (Real messy)/Still a bad bitch, whether I’m sporty or I’m dressy.”
The beat samples Diddy’s “Bad Boys For Life” and he even makes an appearance in the music video.
