Right before the pandemic hit, moviegoers were treated to arguably one of the best films of the past decade in 2019’s Parasite. The South Korean film was absolutely lauded by critics and audiences worldwide and became the first foreign language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, no small task in a film circuit dominated by movies shot in English. Fans have been patiently awaiting the film’s sequel, which the director promised was on the way quite a while ago now, it looks like they will be getting a taste of Parasite a little sooner than expected. South Korean Actor Park Seo-joon, of Parasite fame, has been cast to appear in a new upcoming Marvel project, The Marvels.
In 2019’s Parasite, Director Bong Joon-ho aimed to depict the class struggles in South Korea through the story of an impoverished family who attempts to infiltrate the life and home of one more successful than themselves. In the bizarre film, Seo-joon plays the character Min who introduces the two families, completely unbeknownst to the former’s plans. The tension that is present throughout virtually the entirety of Parasite could lend useful in his next project, where he has been cast to appear in the Captain Marvel sequel titled The Marvels. The project is set to be a continuation of the DIsney+ series Ms. Marvel with Brie Larson reprising her starring role, though Seo-joon’s role remains undisclosed. The project is set to be directed by Candyman director Nia DaCosta, written by Megan McDonnell, and is expected to release sometime next year.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the distribution of new films, few films since have been able to rival Parasite. Its intensely modest demeanor is enough to leave virtually any viewer on the edge of their seat, and that is sure to translate well to the superhero genre if Seo-joon can carry it over. We will have to wait and see what role he is cast in first ultimately, however it looks like he has plenty of time. Viewers can anticipate the release of The Marvels in 2022.
