Spiral, also known as Spiral: From the Book of Saw, is the ninth installment in the Saw film series. With a history of blood, sex, gore, and extreme violence, the newest film seems to take on a much different approach: the story.
Chris Rock stars as Detective Zeke Banks who seems to be the only good cop around. Rock brings something new and refreshing by integrating his comedic chops into the overall seriousness of the film. While Saw isn’t something one usually gravitates towards if they’re in the mood for a good laugh, the little pockets of comedy work for Rock and don’t take away from the overall concept. There are a few special moments where Marcus banks aka Samuel L. Jackson have a brief banter that is sure to lift your spirits!
While Spiral is the ninth installment, theres no need to binge the previous eight films to understand the overall message. Its story is more of a cat and mouse game where Rock follows clues to catch the antagonist, which hasn’t been seen since the very first movie. Spiral‘s antagonist Detective William Schenk (Max Minghella) is undoubtedly a cold blooded murderer, as his need for revenge fuels his desire for “justice.” As a result, he kills all of the crooked detectives who work in their unit. Theres a special moment where Rock seems to second guess his own stance in the overall plot!
There seems an open ending, which hints the possibility of a tenth installment to the Saw franchise. Overall, Spiral was quite interesting and a must see. It is playing in select theaters and unreleased on VOD platforms.
