The reboot of Marvel Studios’ Blade movie is still encountering difficulties, with recent reports indicating that a new director is being sought yet again.
The film is expected to feature Lilith as the primary villain, in addition to a newly introduced male antagonist. Initially slated for release in 2025, Blade has now been taken off Marvel’s schedule, making its premiere date unclear. However, despite these setbacks, the film is still in the works, with Mahershala Ali confirmed to portray the legendary vampire hunter.
In 2024, the reboot of Marvel Studios’ Blade movie faced yet another setback with the departure of its director. As reported by The Wrap, Yann Demange has stepped away from the project, becoming the second director to exit after Bassam Tariq. Interestingly, the split with the French-Algerian director reportedly occurred some time ago and was described as entirely amicable. This development adds to the series of challenges that have plagued the long-awaited film, which has already experienced significant delays.
In addition to parting ways with its director, the Blade project has experienced substantial rewrites of its screenplay. Marvel Studios recruited seasoned writer Eric Pearson, celebrated for his contributions to Fantastic Four, to lead the new writing efforts. He took over from a previous team of writers that included Michael Green, Nic Pizzolatto, and Michael Starrbury.
Throughout its development, the film has encountered various creative hurdles, notably with initial drafts that allegedly pushed Mahershala Ali’s portrayal of Blade into a secondary role, prioritizing other characters instead.
As of 2025, fresh information has surfaced regarding the Blade film. A recent update shared by MyTimeToShineHello on X reveals that the movie will introduce Lilith as a prominent character alongside a newly introduced male antagonist. Furthermore, the studio is once again in the process of selecting a director and is anticipated to make a decision shortly. According to reports, the screenplay has been revised to take place in a contemporary setting, positioning Lilith as the central villain of the story.
The Blade film was first revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con 2019 List of Announced Panels – San Diego Comic-Con Unofficial Blog in 2019 but has since encountered several postponements. Originally planned for release on November 7, 2025, Disney decided to eliminate it from their schedule as of October 2024.
According to an insider who spoke to The Wrap, the priority is clear: “It’s far more crucial to ensure Blade is executed properly than to rush its release.” As Marvel shifts its focus towards delivering high-quality content rather than simply increasing the number of projects, Blade is currently in the pre-production phase, with the studio actively looking for a new director to lead the project.
