When The Batman hit theaters in 2022, it wasn’t just another superhero movie—it was a cinematic event. Matt Reeves‘ noir-driven take on Gotham’s Dark Knight struck a chord with audiences and critics alike, redefining Batman for a new generation. But by the time The Batman Part II arrives in theaters on October 1st, 2027, over five years will have passed since Robert Pattinson first donned the cape and cowl.
So, what’s causing the delay? The road to Gotham’s next chapter has been anything but smooth. Filmmaker Matt Reeves has reportedly faced personal challenges, the 2023 WGA strikes halted development, and Hollywood’s ever-changing landscape hasn’t helped matters. Even Pattinson himself is feeling the weight of time, joking in a recent interview:
“I started out as young Batman and I’m going to be f**ing old Batman by the sequel”.
What We Know So Far
While details remain scarce, Pattinson recently confirmed to Technikart Magazine that he will begin filming after wrapping up Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey later this year. His knowledge of the script is still “vague,” adding to the mystery surrounding the project.
The biggest question on fans’ minds? Will Barry Keoghan’s Joker return? Keoghan made a cryptic debut in The Batman, briefly interacting with Paul Dano’s Riddler in Arkham. An extended deleted scene later revealed that Batman had already crossed paths with the Clown Prince of Crime during his “Year One” in Gotham. Serving as a tantalizing setup for a future rematch.
Keoghan himself has expressed enthusiasm about returning to the role: “If the opportunity came about, yes, I’d love to explore, and given the opportunity, really dive into it.” However, he insists that no official talks have taken place—at least, not yet.
The Weight Of Expectations
Anticipation for The Batman Part II is sky-high, and with good reason. The first film delivered a brooding, detective-driven story that set itself apart from other Batman adaptations.
Now, with Reeves’ intricate world-building and Pattinson’s gritty, grounded take on the Caped Crusader, fans are eager to see how the saga unfolds. Nonetheless, with Pattinson back in the suit and Reeves behind the scenes, one thing is certain—vengeance is worth the wait.
